Getting Your NIF as an EU Citizen
Why your NIF process is faster — and what documents you need.

Why it's easier for you
EU citizens don't need a fiscal representative. Finanças treats your home address inside the EU as a valid address until you settle in Portugal. That alone removes the €80–€150/year cost most non-EU applicants pay, plus the hassle of finding a representative.
What to bring
Two documents are enough.
- Your EU national ID card OR passport (original)
- Proof of address — a recent utility bill, bank statement, or municipal certificate from your home country, in any EU language
Where to go
Pick the path that suits your week:
- Loja de Cidadão (multi-service one-stop shops) — Lisbon and Porto need an online appointment, usually 2–4 weeks out
- Local Finanças office — smaller cities accept walk-ins, take a number
- Online via Portal das Finanças — only works if you already have a Chave Móvel Digital
- Remote services (Bordr, NIFOnline, AnchorlessRelocation) — €50–€150, deliver by email in 5–10 days
After you have it
Memorise the number — you'll be asked for it constantly: at restaurants for tax-deductible receipts, at the pharmacy, when buying a SIM card, opening a bank account, signing any lease.
