Retiring to Portugal from Another EU Country
How to make sure your pension keeps arriving in your Portuguese bank account.

Notify your home pension authority
Tell your country's pension service the moment you have a Portuguese address and IBAN. EU pensions can be paid SEPA-direct without FX cost or international wire fees.
- Provide your Portuguese address (must match Portal das Finanças)
- Provide your Portuguese IBAN — preferred over a foreign account for Portuguese tax filing
- Update your tax residency declaration (most countries have a form for this)
- Continue submitting any 'life certificate' your home country requires (often annually)
Get your S1 immediately
Request the S1 form from your home authority before you move (or shortly after). Lodging it with Portuguese Segurança Social grants you free SNS healthcare paid for by your home country — a major saving over private insurance, which for a 65-year-old can run €150–€400/month.
Tax residency and treaty rules
Once you spend more than 183 days in Portugal you're a Portuguese tax resident, and your worldwide pension income is generally taxable here.
- State pensions taxed in the country paying them in some treaties (Germany, France); in Portugal in others
- Private/occupational pensions usually taxed where the recipient resides — i.e. Portugal
- Always check the bilateral tax treaty before drawing large lump sums
Healthcare beyond SNS
Many retirees pair SNS with a complementary private plan (Médis 60+, Multicare Sénior, AdvanceCare) for €40–€100/month. This skips waiting lists for specialists, dental work and physiotherapy, while keeping SNS for emergencies and hospitalisations.
Practical first-month checklist
Most retirees can complete this in 3–4 weeks of arrival.
- NIF (free) and update Portuguese address at Finanças
- Open a Portuguese bank account (Activobank, Millennium, Caixa Geral)
- Register CRUE at the câmara
- Lodge S1 at Segurança Social
- Get Utente number at Centro de Saúde
- Notify home pension authority of new address and IBAN
- Talk to a tax adviser before the next Portuguese tax return (March–June)
