Finding English-Speaking Doctors

The good news first

Portugal has the highest English proficiency in Southern Europe, and almost every doctor under 50 in private practice speaks at least functional medical English. In Lisbon, Porto, Cascais and the Algarve you can build a complete care team — GP, dentist, gynaecologist, paediatrician, therapist — in English without trying hard.

The big private networks

All run dedicated international patient desks and offer multilingual booking lines.

• Lusíadas Saúde — strong in Lisbon and Porto, large international clientele
• CUF — premium-positioned, most English-friendly, biggest network
• Luz Saúde / Hospital da Luz — flagship hospital in Lisbon, top English desk
• Joaquim Chaves Saúde — strong in greater Lisbon and Algarve
• British Hospital Lisbon (now part of CUF) — historic English-language hospital

Online directories

These let you filter by language spoken before booking:

• Top Doctors Portugal — curated, English filters reliable, good reviews
• Doctoralia — bigger pool, less curated, mixed-quality reviews
• AmCham Portugal member directory — accessed via membership, doctor lists tend to be vetted
• Insurance-provider portals (Médis, Multicare, AdvanceCare) — filterable by language

Asking your insurer

If you have private insurance, the most efficient route is to email the insurer directly: 'Por favor, envie-me uma lista de médicos da rede que falam inglês para [especialidade] na zona de [cidade].' You'll get a curated PDF within a day or two.

Beyond the metros

In rural areas and the interior, English in private practice is hit-or-miss. Two workarounds:

• Telemedicine via the major networks works in English from anywhere — useful for routine and follow-ups
• Bring a Portuguese-speaking friend or hire a 'medical accompanier' (€30–€50/visit) for in-person specialist appointments

Reviews — what to trust

Online doctor reviews in Portugal are reliable for bedside manner, waiting times, and admin friction. They're less reliable for clinical skill — patients can't usually judge that. For high-stakes care (surgeon choice, oncology), get a referral from a doctor you already trust, and ask the surgeon directly how many of YOUR specific procedure they do per year.
