Bringing the Family

Family reunification rules for spouses, kids and dependent parents.

Who qualifies as 'family'

Portuguese law (Article 99 of the Foreigners Law) reads broadly. All same-sex marriages and registered partnerships are recognised on equal terms.

  • Spouse or recognised civil partner
  • Minor children of either spouse (biological, adopted, stepchildren)
  • Adult children up to 26 if single and financially dependent (typically students)
  • Dependent parents of the resident or spouse
  • Minor siblings under legal guardianship

Two routes

Choose based on where you and the family are right now.

  • Add family to your initial visa at the consulate — single trip, slow approval
  • Reagrupamento Familiar via AIMA after you're resident — currently the faster path for most families

Documents you'll need

All foreign civil documents need apostille and certified translation.

  • Marriage certificate (≤6 months old where re-issued)
  • Birth certificates for each child
  • Custody / guardianship court orders if shared parenting
  • Proof of accommodation big enough for the household (lease + floor area)
  • Proof of income — see thresholds below
  • Family criminal records (anyone over 16)
  • Travel medical insurance for the visa stage

Income thresholds

The bar is intentionally accessible. As of 2026:

  • Sponsor: 1× minimum wage (~€870/month net)
  • +50% per adult dependant
  • +30% per child
  • Family of 4 (2 adults + 2 kids): roughly €1,827/month combined

Timeline and tips

Reagrupamento submission to first AIMA appointment: 6–14 months at present. The decision itself is usually issued within 90 days of the appointment. Once approved, family members get residence cards tied to your validity, with full rights to work and study.
