Learning Portuguese for CIPLE A2

What CIPLE is

The Certificado Inicial de Português Língua Estrangeira is the A2-level exam set by Universidade de Lisboa's CAPLE. It's the standard proof of language for Portuguese citizenship. Most residence renewals do NOT require it — only naturalisation and certain permanent residence applications do.

What's tested

Four equally-weighted modules covering everyday situations: shopping, doctor's office, asking directions, simple emails.

• Reading comprehension (~45 min) — short texts, signs, ads
• Writing (~45 min) — fill-in forms, short messages 40–60 words
• Listening (~30 min) — announcements, voicemails, short dialogues
• Speaking (~15 min, paired) — introduce yourself, role-play, picture description

How to prepare

Most candidates with 100–150 hours of focused study pass on first attempt. Background in Spanish or Italian shortens that significantly.

• Babbel and Pimsleur — useful for listening but won't get you to A2 alone

Where and when

CIPLE runs 5–6 times a year at CAPLE-accredited centres in Lisbon, Porto, Coimbra, Faro, Funchal and 30+ international cities. Registration closes 4–6 weeks before each session. Fee: €72 (€80 abroad).

Alternatives accepted for citizenship

You don't strictly need CIPLE if you have: a Portuguese-language school certificate (any level above A2), a degree from a Portuguese-speaking country, or completion of the Português Língua de Acolhimento public course. Citizens from CPLP countries (Brazil, Angola, Cape Verde, Mozambique, etc.) are exempt entirely.
