Public vs. Private vs. International Schools

A friendly guide to picking the right path for your kids' future in Portugal.

Public schools (escolas públicas)

Free for residents and one of the fastest ways for kids to integrate — most expat children are conversational in Portuguese within 6–9 months. Quality varies by area; urban centres like Lisbon, Cascais, Porto and Coimbra have strong public options. Enrolment is tied to your residential address (área de residência), so where you sign your lease can decide which school your kid gets.

  • Free tuition; books are subsidised through 12th grade
  • Lunch ~€1.50–€2.50/day, free for low-income families
  • Transport via public bus or municipal scolar (school transport)
  • Class sizes 24–28 in primary, 26–30 in secondary

Private Portuguese schools (colégios)

Fee-paying schools that follow the Portuguese national curriculum, often with smaller classes, religious affiliation (St. James, Maristas, Salesianos), or a strong second-language stream.

  • Fees typically €350–€900/month, plus enrolment €500–€1,500
  • Class sizes 18–24
  • Stronger English/French streams than most public schools
  • Same national exames at the end — same university admission

International schools

Teach in English (or French, German, etc.) and follow a foreign curriculum — IB, British, American, or French. Best for families staying short-term or whose kids will continue education abroad.

  • Fees €8,000–€25,000/year per child
  • Plus enrolment (€2,000–€5,000) and capital levy (€1,000–€3,000)
  • Bus services usually €100–€200/month extra
  • Waitlists 6–24 months for top schools in Lisbon and Cascais

How to choose

Consider how long you'll stay, your child's age, language abilities, and your budget.

  • Under 8 → public or bilingual; languages click in months
  • 8–13 → private Portuguese or bilingual is a sweet spot
  • 14+ heading to foreign uni → international curriculum simplifies admission
  • Staying long-term → Portuguese system, full integration
