Signing Up for School: A Document Checklist

When to apply

Timing varies wildly by school type — miss the public window and you fall to a waitlist for any school with capacity, often far from home.

• Public school: mid-April to mid-May for September enrolment, via Portal das Matrículas (matriculas.edu.gov.pt)
• Late public applications: any time, but you take whatever's left
• Private Portuguese: rolling, often with January/February deadlines for September
• International: rolling but waitlists 12–18+ months for top schools

Documents you'll need

Have these ready in digital and paper form. Most schools want originals plus copies.

• Child's passport or ID and birth certificate (translated if not in English/Spanish/French)
• Child's NIF (every student needs one — get it free at any Finanças)
• Parents' passports/IDs and NIFs
• Proof of residence (utility bill or lease) — required for public school catchment
• Vaccination record (Boletim de Vacinas) matched to Portuguese requirements
• Previous school records / transcripts (translated and apostilled for older students)
• Passport-size photo of the child
• EHIC, SNS Utente number, or proof of private health insurance

Apostille and translation

For non-EU documents, you'll usually need an Apostille of The Hague and a certified Portuguese translation.

Step-by-step (public school)

The Portal das Matrículas flow:

• Get NIFs for every family member
• Register your address at the Junta de Freguesia (atestado de morada)
• Create a Portal das Matrículas account using Chave Móvel Digital or Cartão de Cidadão
• Submit the application during the open window
• Upload all required documents
• Wait for the carta de colocação (placement letter) — usually July
• Confirm acceptance within 5 working days of receipt

International schools — the visit matters

Most international schools require an in-person interview and an entry assessment (English level for older kids, observation for younger). Apply online first, then plan a 1–2 day visit. Many schools waive the visit for families still abroad and accept a Zoom interview + recent school report.
